Miracle Fruit

This small red berry, dubbed “the miracle fruit”, can alter how we recognize different flavors. Beer can taste like chocolate, Tabasco sauce can taste like donuts. People even get together to have “flavor-tripping parties” where people can try all sorts of different foods and have them taste completely different than what they’re supposed to. 

The fruit, synsepalum dulcificum, contains a special protein that binds to your taste buds and produces sweet flavors when it comes into contact with acid. So if you eat something that’s really sour or spicy, it will end up tasting really sweet. People have actually known about the miracle fruit for centuries, it’s legal, and it has no known dangerous side-effects. It is, however, hard to get a hold of some. It’s native to West Africa, it’s highly perishable, and each of the tiny berries costs about $2.
